5 Tips for Taming the Homework Hassle
1. Homework Hour - Make a specific hour or two for homework hour. That way, everyone in the home is working on homework at the same time and there are no distractions.
2. Creature Comforts - Make the homework hour more fun by adding in creature comforts. If your child love hot cocoa, provide some hot cocoa and popcorn that he or she can enjoy while they work on homework. Adding in a creature comforts makes your child enjoy the process more.
3. Goodie Grabs - Allow your child to earn some goodies, and it doesn't have to be monetarily related. If your child works hard on homework, he can earn one hour of TV time, or an extra 20 min of Wii play time. An extra 15 min before bedtime, or the breakfast of his choice. Have fun with that!
4. Down Time - Kids have been stressed out and rushed all day at school. When they get home, permit them to have some down time before starting homework. Allow them one hour to play outside, ride bikes, or watch an episode of iCarly. Announce the homework hour begins 5:30, and let them have free time until then.
5. Break It Up - If your child has a lot of homework, attack it in shifts. Don't try to complete it all at once. This is a HUGE strategy especially if you have a child that struggles with focusing, or has ADD. Maybe work on 2 assignments, then take a 20 min break and go shoot hoops in the driveway. Then get into the next assignment. Breaking homework up into bite sized portions will allow your child to stay focused longer and succeed more.
